What I Did This Weekend…

….Construction Paper Edition!
So I planned on finishing up a sewing tutorial and sharing with you on Friday. My kids had other ideas and then this weekend we spent it making Halloween Decorations, a very special countdown chain, cutting Little Man’s hair and finally deciding what we were going to be for Halloween!
Here are the pictures and a few links to ideas and/or printables!

Little Man helped me cut & glue this free printable banner (it can be personalized!)together and choose where we hung it!

Milk Jug Ghosts (idea found here) I still have to cut a hole in the back and put our white Christmas lights in them but I think they are so cute! I have one more milk jug to add to it later today after lunch ha-ha!

Our countdown chain that stretches alllllll the way across our playroom (the center isn’t pictured) See our little footprint flag in the background? We still love it!

And lastly Little Man has a tricycle that he rides in the house and he kept saying he was ‘waiting for the green light’ while sitting on it so I made him a little traffic light and hung it in a doorway for him to pretend with…he loves it! Simple toys are the BEST!!

Ok that’s it for me today- hopefully tomorrow I’ll be back with a sewing tutorial OR our homemade Halloween costumes!
What are you & your kids going as?? Do you do a 'family theme' or just everyone picks something different?

Have A Happy Day,

How to Use a photo from Flickr on your Blog

So during the SITS Girls tribe event it was brought up in my tribe about how to use flickr photos in your blog and how to do that & give proper credit. I decided to post a little photo tutorial on how to do that!

Here we go! Just follow the orange arrows to see where to click!

Go to www.flickr.com and type your search term into the search box, click ‘search’:

On the next page click on “Advanced Search”:

On the next page scroll down until you see the section about “Creative Commons License”  Make sure you check the box next to the “Only search within Creative Commons-Licensed Content”  and then click “Search”:

Find a photo you would like to use and click it:

At this point you will want to have a word processing program open like Word or NotePad. Copy & paste the url of the photo into your word document:

Now click on Actions and in the drop down menu click on “View All Sizes”:

On the next page we are going to double check that the photographer will let us use the image for what we want by clicking on “Some rights reserved” (it might say something a little different on your photo so just click on what it says here- it should take you to the CC License page too):

A page similar to this should come up, please read it ALL carefully & make sure that you can use it for what you intend. If you have any questions at all then either don’t use it or contact the photographer! When you are done click your browser’s back button (see arrow)

Next you’ll want to choose a size to download- I almost always choose ‘small’ it’s still big enough for what I want and it takes less time and storage space. Sometimes the larger sizes are not listed under the CC License and it will tell you that right next to the word “download” in the line above the sizes. Make sure you chose a size that is under the CC License.

The page should refresh and the line above where you chose your size should change to say “Download the _____ size of this photo” Click that.

Save the file like you would normally on your computer.

After you have saved it you need to click on the photographer’s name which is right next to the “Some Rights Reserved” that you clicked earlier. Clicking the photographer’s name will take you to their Flickr photostream.

Copy and paste the url for their photo stream into your Word document as well.

There! Now you have the picture saved to your computer so you can upload it to your blog like you normally do and you have the two credits- which you will hyperlink to under the picture on your blog. Technically you only need the url for the actual picture (the first url we copy & pasted) but I like to use the photostream one also just in case the photographer deletes the picture. At least I can give credit to them in that case.

If you’d like to see how I used this photo on my blog recently check out this post:

I hope this helped some of you & if you have any questions please ask away! Did I miss anything?

A Little Bloggy Hop!

Today we are doing something a little different- it's a blog hop! This all came about because of the new 'tribes' at the SITS Girls blog these women involved in the hop are in my 'tribe'

It starts here and if you follow everyone's links you should come full circle right back here! Please leave everyone some comment love & I hope you find some interesting new blogs to follow!

I am showing some of the posts I found interesting at the blog 'Home is a Four Letter Word'

Here goes:

My first blog post I'm highlighting is one I think we can all relate to: the humor in those 'some assembly required' pieces we buy. Read all about it in 'Disassembly Required'

Next is a post is part funny part 'why didn't I think of that?' Gillian talks about people and how they perceive you if they see you walking with an empty baby stroller (which is just funny ) and then she talks about a man who has dogs and how it 'messed up' his floor and his really really great (and frugal!) way to 'repair' them! Check it out in 'Hooray For The Everyday!'

Lastly I wanted to highlight a post from the archives. So I choose: 'Dear Abby' because this post sums up about 99% of my projects 'round my house. One big game of 'we want to do tins but it needs to wait for this which has to wait until this gets done' and on and on and on and......

So there are my 3 post picks from 'Home is A Four Letter Word' :)
Please go visit Gillian and see who you are going to hop to next!

In case you lose your way (or some participants haven't posted their hop yet) the hop order goes:
Creative Kristi (you are here)
Home Is A Four Letter Word
Our Poverty With A View
Very Merry
Olive & Love
Stuff & Nonsense
Imperfect Nest
And because I can't have a blog post without a picture......Miss E says have a happy day!!

Have A Happy Day,

A Glimpse Inside

Today I have a guest post from Allison at A Glimpse Inside- she is amazingly talented and I have a soft spot for her since she's a military wife too ;) We military wives just 'get' each other I think! Anyway we are blog swapping so I have a post up over there too! After you check out her post below make sure you go over and give her some comment love! Take it away Allison!

Hello! I am so excited to be blog swapping with Kristi today! Kristi is so sweet and I am so happy she wanted to have me over for a "visit" in her world today.

First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Allison and I am from A Glimpse Inside. I am an Army wife with a creative side. I LOVE to craft, paint, sew, take photos, decorate, go thrifting and more!

The dear husband, Travis, and I are currently living in KY. We just moved here in May from our first duty station in VA. We won't be here long but we enjoy being close to our home state of TN. He is super supportive and encourages me to create anything that comes to my mind.

But enough about me... I bet you all just want me to get to the good stuff. :)

On my blog, I share pictures and stories of our life along with my crafts, recipes, thrift finds, decor, and more. I started blogging almost a year ago and it has become quite an addiction.
Here are some things you'll find.

We bought these crates at a Flea Market and they are now a table in my husband's "man cave."

On Tuesdays, I share yummy recipes.
This one is AWESOME and a must try- Dalmatian Cupcakes.

I love to share furniture or project transformations. It is always so fun to see what something will turn into when you are finished.

Coffee Table Upcycle

Mail Center Redo

But I mostly share crafts! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to craft! I love to share the tutorials on how to make them too. Here are some of the Halloween and Fall crafts that I've created recently.

"Spooktacular" Subway Art

Fun Fall Garland using toilet paper and paper towel rolls

Glitter Painting Tutorial

That is just some of the things that I share on my blog.
You can find more of my tutorials here as well.

I would absolutely LOVE for you all to come visit me in my neck of the woods and take a glimpse inside my world. Stop by, take a look around, stay awhile and maybe leave a comment or two. Who doesn't love those comments? I know I do!

Thank you Kristi for having me over to share this tutorial and blog swapping with me!
You are a fabulous host! :)

Thanks so much Allison for coming over to share today!

Have A Happy Day,

How to turn a tank top into a nursing tank

This is one of those projects that takes for-ever. Not to be confused with just forever- but for-EVER! I have been working on it here & there for almost 2 months. Its a project that would only take a couple hours total (minus the dying part) but I suppose it's the fact that I had a newborn & a toddler this summer that set me back on 'production' time. (like how I made it sound like I produce things? Big & important sounding........or not.)

Anyway.

How to turn a shelf bra tank into a nursing tank.

OR I could call the first part of this tutorial 'how to replace the straps on your favorite tank top'

Ok here we go.

If you know me in real life you know I have a slight addiction to shelf bra tanks. I have pretty much worn one everyday for nearly 10 years now. Love. Them. Well when I was pregnant with Little Man I bought a couple of Old Navy's maternity ones (the length is perfect for non-pregnant ladies to by the way). Well apparently after wearing them for 3 years the straps had had enough and started coming apart.

Not wanting to get rid of them just because the straps were falling apart I figured I could replace the straps. But before replacing the straps I decided to dye the top pink. Why? Because I had dye & I could. Hehehe

Then I cut the straps off the tank top
(sorry for the blurry photos I had to take these with my phone)

Here is where you can skip ahead to the strap replacement part if you aren't making a nursing tank.
So then I cut apart the neckline on the front only of the tank top.

Ok if you skipped ahead here's where you want to jump back in.

To make a cute little strap to replace the ones we removed you will need a strip of fabric that is 4 times as wide as you want your strap. So if you wanted a 1/2 inch wide strap you need your fabric to be 2 inches wide. The length is from the front of the tank top over your shoulder and to the back of the tank top plus a little extra for seam allowance. You will need two pieces that are these sizes.

This is the strap material right side down.

Fold it in half lengthwise and iron.

Open it up. Then take each long edge and fold/iron it to meet in the center.

Next fold it in half again and iron.
This is the finished width of your strap. Sew along the edge using a small seam allowance.

If you are not making a nursing tank then attach the straps to the outside of the tank top where you cut off the original straps folding both sort ends under and sewing a square with an X in the center. Add a button as decoration if you'd like. You are done!

If you are making a nursing tank top then you need to attach the straps to the back of the tank tucking the short end under and using the square with an X in center method. Then also attach it to the front but only on the fabric that is closer to your body (in other words not the fabric that is the outside of the tank top.)

Next take some of these:
And hand sew (I know-yuck!) the eye part to your new strap on the front and the hook part to the outside fabric.
You can see in that picture that I sewed some of the extra strap fabric to the front of the tank top- I did this to add some structure before sewing on the hook since the fabric was pretty flimsy. When you see the final product you will see how it looks like a continuation of the strap.

After that all you need to do is try on your tank top, unhook both sides so the front flap falls down and mark where you will need to cut your nursing openings. Then cut a slit in a shape like two facing parenthesis: () on each side.

If your tank top is a jersey material like mine you won't need to hem the raw edges because it won't fray. If it isn't jersey then go ahead and hem all raw edges.

Then you are all done! Wear it alone in the summer, under a cute shrug in the fall/spring and even under a sweater in the winter (just pull up the sweater to nurse.) You can remove the hooks and sew the front flap back to the back flap and have a regular tank top again when you are done nursing too!

mouse over image to see before and after:

There you have it! Let me know if you have any questions & if you make one I'd love to see it!
